Digital Education Center Directed Studies Syllabus
Class Description
Directed Studies is a support class for students with Individual Education Plans (IEPs). This class provides instruction for students as outlined in their IEP. Instruction is designed to assist students in meeting their Individual Educational Plan goals and to assist students learn, understand, and reinforce concepts presented in the general curriculum. This class is supplemental to student’s general education classes and students must be actively participating in their general education classes.
Grading
K-8: Grades are not awarded for students in grades K-8. Progress is reported to you via special education progress reports that are sent home according to the scheduled outline in students’ IEPs. 9-12: This class is graded on a pass/fail basis. Classes will be held via video conferencing as directed by the special education teacher. Students will participate and engage in learning activities as directed by their teacher. Students are awarded a pass/fail grade worth .25 of elective credit at the end of each semester.
General Classroom Expectations
1. Be on time for class. Communicate any absences to the teacher prior to scheduled classes.
2. Engage in discussion and participate in assigned classwork.
3. Demonstrate digital citizenship
Technology & Materials
● Students must follow Tooele County School District’s Acceptable Use Policy.
● Students need to be seated upright at a desk or table in a quiet room free from distractions. Headphones are highly encouraged to help students focus and to minimize outside noise.
● Student microphones and cameras need to be working properly and turned on for the duration of class unless arrangements are made with the teacher.
● Students need access to pencil/paper or a personal whiteboard during class.
● TCSD provides Chromebooks to all students. To check out a Chromebook for your student, please contact our front office.
Attendance
● Planned absences should be reported 24 hours in advance to each special education provider scheduled. We understand that unforeseen circumstances arise such as illness or emergencies, but ask that you please notify your child’s provider(s) as soon as possible if your child will be absent.
● For classes with one student, students will be marked with an “unexcused absence” if the teacher has waited for them to join their online class after 10 minutes without prior notice. Within the 10 minutes students will be marked tardy.
● Should a provider be absent, classes will be rescheduled, a substitute will be made available or virtual substitute plans will be provided.
Schedules
● Special Education classes will be held virtually with groups of 3-10 students unless the student requires 1:1 services as documented in their IEP. Students may be provided services with other students including any related services.
● We ask that students not log on for services more than 5 minutes prior to their scheduled class as teachers are meeting with other students.
● Special Education services follow the Tooele County School District’s calendar.
Evaluations (please communicate with your case manager to determine if this applies)
● All special education evaluations will be held at the Digital Education Center at 211 South Tooele Boulevard, Tooele, UT 84074 unless otherwise indicated by your providers
● Parents are responsible for transporting their students in order for these standardized assessments to be given with fidelity. Some assessments will be given virtually but must proctored in-person, at the Digital Education Center building.
● Parents have the right to request an evaluation by contacting the special education department at the Digital Education Center
